Activities

Music

As well as music lessons as per the Primary School Music Curriculum, a repertoire of tin whistle tunes are taught in a progressive manner from second class onwards. The school also provides the opportunity for group music sessions with children who play other instruments.

In conjunction with the Irish Language organisation Gael Linn, children also get the opportunity to participate in a competition showcasing Irish language songs, poems, dance and drama. Scór na bPáistí also facilitates a similar display of dance, song, drama and recitation.

The school was recently involved in RTÉ’s Cór na nÓg where a number songs in three part arrangement were perfected allowing the children the chance to sing with children from other schools.

Sport

The school is affiliated with the Volleyball Association of Ireland (VAI). The VAI has adapted the traditional 4 v 4 volleyball game to suit primary school children resulting in a game called Spikeball. The game, primarily aimed at 5th and 6th classes, places an emphasis on fun and participation. Local blitz competitions have been held where the basic skills are demonstrated and practiced. The National Spikeball Championships take place annually. The school has enjoyed success at county, regional and national levels.

Gaelscoil Philib Barún competes in all codes of Gaelic games organised by Cumann na mBunscol. Indoor Hurling and Camogie and mini-sevens competitions run annually as well as an Under 11/13 Hurling league and a Camogie league. Similar competitions take place in Gaelic football. Congratulations to the girl’s football team which reached the final in 2009. Training in both codes takes place weekly at the school, beginning with Football before Christmas with Camogie and Hurling following after Easter.

The school also participates in 5 a side soccer blitzes organised by the FAI and basketball blitzes organised locally. Both girls and boys participate in these competitions.

Tag rugby training is also offered after school. A County tag rugby blitz takes place annually with emphasis on fair play and skills. This year a very young team of 3rd, 4th and 5th class boys came joint second and received a special award for the best skills of the competition.

Swimming lessons are organised annually for all classes and take place in SplashWorld, Tramore.
